Akateemiset opinnot: Monni suoritti tanssitaiteen kandidaatintutkinnon Teatterikorkeakoulussa vuonna 1995 ja aloitti tanssitaiteen tohtorintutkinnot opinnot 1996. Väitöstutkimus käsitteli tanssitaiteen paradigman muutoksia ja tanssin ontologiaa. Hän valmistui tanssitaiteen tohtoriksi 2004.
Tutkimus ja julkaisut: Monni on väitellyt Teatterikorkeakoulusta tanssitaiteen tohtoriksi vuonna 2004, ja hänen väitöksensä kirjallinen osa on ensimmäinen suomen kielellä julkaistu laajamittainen tanssijantyön teoriaa kehittelevä tutkimus. Taiteellisessa väitöstyössään hän tutki tanssitaiteen paradigman muutoksia 1900-luvulla ja luonnosteli tanssin uuden paradigman ontologiaa muun muassa Martin Heideggerin eksistenssifilosofian (Oleminen ja aika 1929/2000) ja taiteen ajattelun (Taideteoksen alkuperä 1935/1998)) avulla. Monni on julkaissut lukuisia tanssin teoreettista jäsennystä, historiaa ja tanssitaiteilijan toimenkuvaa käsitteleviä artikkeleja eri teoksissa ja julkaisuissa 1990-luvulta lähtien.
2000-luvulla Monni on pohtinut erityisesti koreografian laajennettua käsitettä (sosiaalinen koreografia, taustanaan systeemiteoreettinen ajattelu), koreografian poliittisia ulottuvuuksia, tanssijan tieto-taitoa kehollisen havainnon harjoittamisena sekä komposition ontologiaa. Hänen viimeaikainen kiinnostuksen kohteensa on liittynyt komposition ajatteluun prosessiontologian (A. F. Whitehead) tarjoaman näkökulman ja käsitteistön kautta.
Taideyliopiston Teatterikorkeakoulussa Monni on ollut ideoimassa ja perustamassa tanssin tutkimuksen Kinesis-julkaisusarjaa, jonka toimitustyötä hän on tehnyt vuodesta 2011. Kinesis-sarjassa on julkaistu 2015 mennessä 6 kirjaa, joista kolme on kansainvälisiä julkaisuja. Monni on toiminut Teatterikorkeakoulun tutkimusneuvostossa vuodesta 2009 ja usean koreografian alan väitöstutkijan ohjaajana vuodesta 2009. Monni on hoitanut tanssitaiteen professuuria (painopisteenä koreografia) Taideyliopiston Teatterikorkeakoulussa ja toiminut koreografian maisterin tutkinnon koulutusohjelman johtajana vuodesta 2009 (-2018).
Academic studies: Monni got her Bachelor’s Degree in Dance in the Theatre Academy Helsinki in 1995 and began her doctoral studies in dance in 1996. Her doctoral research focused on analyzing the core ontological changes in dance art in the 1900s and aimed to draft a new (post-metaphysical) ontology for dance since 1960s. She was granted the Doctoral Degree in Dance in 2000s.
Research and publications: Monni was granted the Doctoral Degree in Dance at the Theatre Academy in 2004. The written part of her doctoral thesis was the first extensive theory concerning the ontology of dance to be published in Finnish. In her artistic dissertation, she researched changes in dance paradigms in the 20th century and presented her findings on the new post-metaphysical dance ontology in relation to e.g. Martin Heidegger’s philosophy of existence and the Origin of the work of Art. Monni has published numerous articles on the ontological aspects and history of dance, and dance artist’s work in different books and publications since the 1990s.
In 2000s, Monni has written and researched especially the expanded notion of choreography (e.g. social choreography, with background in systems theoretical thinking), political dimensions of choreography, dancer's tekhne as a practice of bodily perception and ontology of composition. Recently her interests have been in questions of composition in relation to process ontology (A. F. Whitehead) and different representation modes in relation to choreography.
Monni initiated and founded the Kinesis publication series of dance research at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki and she has worked as its co-editor since 2011. By 2018, 9 books have been published in the Kinesis series, out of which four are international publications.
Monni has been a member of the Theatre Academy’s Research Council since 2009 and she has been a supervisor to several doctoral students in the field of choreography since 2009. Monni has held a professorship in dance (choreography) at the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki and has been the head of the Master's programme in choreography since 2009.
